I have a 1995 MX7A and am having a heck of a problem keeping mufflers from cracking. Has anyone out there had similar problems and if so, what is the secret formula to prevent this? Jeromy, help me out here.

Rick: I have a 1995 MX7A also with same problem on starboard side. Exhaust manifold tab seperated. Also found crack in spinner dome and large spinner backing plate. Problem is muffler mounting tabs (2) and tail pipe clamp too tight. Loosen a little so muffler has some wiggle room. Mine is rough for couple seconds on start up, shakes. Thanks for the quick reply. I had the exact same thing happen with my spinner and back plate. I just replaced that 6 months ago after seeing a crack develop. And you are right about the loose hanger strap. It can't be too tight. My mechanic thinks that the engine moves around a lot during engine start and perhaps hits the end of the strap. Whatever the reason, the system is poorly designed. I have tried to make as soft a start as I can never exceeding 900 rpm until everything is stable.
How many hours do you have on your plane? Mine has a total of 600 hours and I have put on 400 of those. I could have explained the cracked mufflers on my first 100 hours in the airplane. It was real ugly. However, those have since been replaced and I am much smoother on my procedures.

I had my 1987 MX7-180 Maule for 2 years and kept the muffler loose at Jeremy's suggestion (he said he finds very often that mechanics tighten them up way too much) and had never a problem with a cracked muffler. I flew mine for about 300hrs.
By the way - Jeremy is in Arlington at the airshow. I am sure he will reply as soon as he is back.

I keep a little slack on my hanger straps as well but am thinking that I have something else going on. I called Maule Mods in Caldwell, ID and they said that virtually all Maules, probably an exaggeration, crack mufflers. They claim to have a fix for the problem. We'll see.

It's not only the hanger strap, the tailpipes clamp must be snug enough not to rattle and loose enough to allow about a 3in rotation at the end.The header tab attach bolts must be snug but not too tight to rotate the bolt. Finally, the O360 requires great care in throttle reductions so as to eliminate backfire (popping) on descent and the idle must be kept above the rough area.

Thanks for the info. Since you checked me out in my Maule in Oroville, I have been very careful not to retard the throttle too quickly. I am curious, though, about the rough throttle range. My engine seems to run rough between 2000 and 2200 RPM. Are you saying that this is the area to stay out of?

Actually I was referring to the low rpm idling area, usually under 900rpm.

planning a long trip in a m-7 235 carberated. 12,000 ft.
Any power setting that work best I would be interested in knowing.

You will only get about 17-18 inch and if a J or a B engine then you can run any rpm that gets the best performance or best economy which can be found in your Lyc engine book graphs for either the J or B engine. The appropriate J or B fuel flow graph will indicate the g.p.h.

right on, I have the book but is in a closet I can not get to but will before the trip.
Fuel is a bit high. I checked Burly Idaho,, $ 3.15 ,,,Ft Collins $ 3.73 Laramie Wy. was $ 3.20 but not right on flight path. Here at Home Scappoose Ore is $ 2.99

Lookin to putting a GAR Aero GA 56 tailwheel on my M-5 - any info - results? have goodyear 26-inchers on mains. ??Thanks

The casting of the fork on the Gar Aero tailwheel is rather crude and unless the Scott upper is fastened to the fork accurately, you may get shimmy. The fork unit built by Alaska Bushwheels is much better. However if you already have the G.A. then do invest in the wider and properly curved tailspring leaves and clamp from Ak Bushwheels in Joseph OR. You will need to use Scott tension type steering springs with G.A. but you can use Maules compression type with Ak Bush.
