406 ELT
My mechanic and I purchased an Artex 345 with 24” whip antennae and switch. Anyone have experience on where to install the antennae? 2007 M4 180V. One thought was the wing above the flap and one install video had it installed on the tail fuselage on a Grumman. Picture is attached of the unit and proposed wing location.

Re: 406 ELT
Maule drawing 7294X shows installing it in the aft fuselage, upside down, attached to a plate hung from the tube structure. This same plate also holds the ELT itself. I installed mine per this drawing.
If you put the antenna on the wing or on top of the fuselage, and you flip over, you will break the antenna off, rendering it inoperative.

I copied Andy.
Not the best pics but in first one you can see the antenna pointing down form the plate and the second you can see the ELT and antenna but hard to pick out the antenna with the dark background.

Having been upside down in the middle of nowhere, I can give a +1 to mounting on the bottom.
You have to make up your mind about growing up and becoming a pilot. You can't do both!

Re: 406 ELT
Did it that way for my M5 several years ago. Big thumbs up for that install. Only possible downside I can see is if you add an extended baggage the aluminum sidewalls might be to close to the antenna for spec. Sure is nice to have the cabin clear of the ELT. Less chance of banging it while loading.Andy Young wrote: ↑Sat Jun 04, 2022 8:07 amMaule drawing 7294X shows installing it in the aft fuselage, upside down, attached to a plate hung from the tube structure. Re: 406 ELT
I recently purchased this ELT mounting plate from Maule. It comes with the mounting hardware and a print of the Maule drawing.
I thought it was reasonably priced and shipped quickly.

Make sure you have the metal clamp and buckle and not the elastic velcro one for the ME 406. The elastic strap won't hold the 406 in place in a crash. It will tear off the antenna connection and render it useless.
