MXT shimmy dampener

Post by Greg »

1994 MXT -7-160, how much fluid to add to nose wheel shimmy dampener when servicing? Filling locks it up. Thanks

Fill with the rod fully compressed.

MXT shimmy dampener

Filling did not work.....the rod/piston would not move. I filled to 3/4" from full and worked fine. My idea why is that the volume of the rod attached to the piston must be considered. The volume of fluid being forced thru the orifice must have the same room on the other side of the piston to move into. With the attached rod now taking up some of that room as the rod is pushed in it can not move. Also the orientation of the piston can be controlled (there is a small hole in the piston rod that you can use to index the orifice at a lower level in the dampener cylinder in it's horizontal mounting position). This will probably only be clear to someone who has
theirs apart in front of them. Greg

Greg you are correct the volume of oil displaced by the rod can't be in the cylinder it causes hydro-lock . To get it as full as possible removed "O" ring from end cap , fill , assembl with out "O"ring , push in piston rod slowly with a rag to catch the excess oil and blott resss dry, pull out piston , install "O"ring on end cap , oil volume is now correct.
