I can’t get my short wing MX-7-180 to glide anywhere near 1.5 nm per 1,000 ft.
I guess that drag from 31†bushwheels and bare undercarriage legs does significantly reduce the glide ratio, and perhaps also the “best glide†IAS.

Incidentally, after about 500 hrs in my short wing 180 hp MX-7, I flew a 235 with 33’ 8†wing the other day. Climb performance was staggering, but it felt less comfortable/controllable in turbulence and gusty crosswinds. Maybe the “best†is what we’re used to...
